Residency/Graduate study in Veterinary Microbiology at University of Illinois

The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and University of Illinois Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UI VDL) is accepting applications for a three-year, post-DVM, veterinary microbiology resident. One position will be available in the Summer/Fall 2023 semester and the position will remain open until filled. The resident will be qualified for the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists (ACVM) Board Exam through Route 3: residency training program. Opportunities exist for residents to pursue a combined residency/PhD program.

The University of Illinois offers a complete benefits package with a reduced vacation benefit specific to these titles to allow for completion of the clinical duties required by the residency certificate. Tuition and fee waivers are available to qualifying residents and residents receive an annual travel stipend.  Beginning residents receive an annual stipend of $38,144.

The resident will receive training in three veterinary diagnostic categories: bacteriology/mycology, virology, and immunology under two ACVM board-certified diplomates and three faculty members. Residency training will be dedicated to veterinary diagnostic services with diverse cases from companion animals, food animals, and wildlife/exotic animal samples using contemporary diagnostic techniques. Participating in research projects and potential post-training education will be available to gain more academic experience. Upon successful completion, a Residency Certificate and a graduate degree are awarded.

The College of Veterinary Medicine houses the full-service Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, full-service Veterinary Teaching Hospital, and the academic departments of Comparative Biosciences, Pathobiology and Veterinary Clinical Medicine that are actively engaged in research. Champaign-Urbana is located in east-central Illinois and is 2.5 hours from Chicago, 2 hours from Indianapolis, and 3 hours from St. Louis.

A DVM (or equivalent) degree will be required for application. Participants must be a citizen of the US, Canada, Mexico, US permanent resident (i.e. holding a “green card”), or other foreign national with employment authorization from US Citizenship and Immigration Services valid for and during the program’s period of proposed training without our provision of assistance, support or sponsorship in obtaining employment authorization.
