Purpose of position: The Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) supports the clinic veterinarians (DVM) in ensuring quality veterinary care for all pets and sets the flow for the day. As a CVT in a high quality, high volume, spay/neuter setting, this position is responsible for maximizing efficiency and productivity throughout the clinic, while always keeping the safety of patients and other staff first priority.
Duties and Responsibilities Performs all job duties in an efficient, positive and helpful manner. Participates and promotes animal safety and wellness. Shares information to enhance the public’s knowledge of animal welfare, as well as possesses knowledge of HSCO’s mission and programs.
1. Assists with check-in and check-out of patients. 2. Reviews patient charts and ensures they receive the correct services. 3. Continuously communicates with co-workers to maintain the flow of patients. 4. Ensures the safety of pets, clients, and co-workers by utilizing safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols, and maintaining clean, sterile and organized anesthetic/surgical areas. 5. Safely administers anesthetic drugs and intubates patients per clinic procedure. 6. Monitors and ensures the safety of patients while under anesthesia. 7. Assists with surgery when requested by DVM. 8. Accurately maintains and records daily drug logs for each patient. 9. Inventories controlled drugs and locks them in safe each night. 10. Assists with weekly ordering of supplies and weekly, monthly, and yearly inventory of supplies and equipment. 11. Provides excellent customer service to clients, including education in regards to animal care, communicating veterinary concepts, and relaying doctor instructions. 12. Follows sanitation protocol for disinfection, prevention of disease spread, and cleaning 13. Accurately enters records into Clinic HQ as needed. 14. Works with team to complete end of day duties including, but not limited to, cleaning all animal housing used that day, sweeping, mopping, restocking supplies, taking out trash, and other posted duties. 15. May assist in the training of Veterinarian Assistants (VA’s). 16. Regular, consistent and timely attendance. 17. Performs any additional tasks assigned by management.
Required skills and abilities 1. Strong ability to multi-task, quickly and accurately shift attention among multiple tasks under distracting conditions without loss of accuracy or appearance of frustration. 2. Ability to work as a team. Must be willing and able to communicate effectively with co-workers. 3. Must be organized and have excellent attention to detail, especially around medication dosages and drawing up correct drugs / amounts. 4. Ability to problem solve, anticipating problems before they occur. Must be available and able to respond appropriately and immediately to emergency situations that may occur in the performance of duties. 5. Capable of providing excellent customer service to each and every client, ensuring they feel safe and comfortable leaving their pets in BSN care. 6. Strong math skills, including the ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentages, as well as convert units of measure. 7. Basic computer knowledge, can navigate web-based software, as well as Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel. 8. Adept in safe animal handling, including knowledge of how to use animal handling PPE and safety equipment. 9. Must be able to safely handle and restrain aggressive dogs and cats. 10. Advanced knowledge of anesthesia including induction, intubation, patient monitoring and anesthetic complications.
